La cr\u00e9ation du Patty Melt est g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement attribu\u00e9e \u00e0 William Wallace \u201cTiny\u201d Naylor, propri\u00e9taire des restaurants Tiny Naylor\u2019s Coffee Shop et Biff\u2019s Drive-Ins \u00e0 San Francisco et Los Angeles. Tiny aurait invent\u00e9 le sandwich dans son restaurant de Powell Street \u00e0 San Francisco, en cherchant \u00e0 marier la robustesse d\u2019un hamburger avec la texture grill\u00e9e d\u2019un croque-monsieur ou grilled cheese tout en proposant un sandwich plus convivial et rapide \u00e0 d\u00e9guster que le hamburger classique. Il a l\u2019id\u00e9e de coincer un steak hach\u00e9 entre deux tranches de pain au levain, puis adopte rapidement le pain de seigle pour sa texture parfaite au grill. L\u2019innovation majeure fut de griller tous les ingr\u00e9dients ensemble pour obtenir un sandwich \u201cfusionn\u00e9\u201d o\u00f9 pain, steak, fromage suisse et oignons caram\u00e9lis\u00e9s s\u2019associent \u00e0 la d\u00e9gustation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D\u00e8s les ann\u00e9es 1950-1960, le Patty Melt s\u2019impose dans les diners et drive-ins typiques des bords de routes am\u00e9ricaines, profitant du boom des road trips et de l\u2019essor de la culture \u201ccomfort food\u201d. Chaque \u00e9tablissement d\u00e9veloppe sa version propre, variant parfois les fromages ou int\u00e9grant des sauces maison. On le retrouve d&rsquo;ailleurs au menu des chaines Friendly&rsquo;s, Denny\u2019s et Whataburger. Ainsi, le sandwich,  devient un favori des Am\u00e9ricains, apparaissant fr\u00e9quemment dans le Top 15 des plus consomm\u00e9s, m\u00eame s\u2019il restera longtemps discret en dehors des \u00c9tats-Unis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A noter enfin que le restaurant Tiny Naylor\u2019s Coffee Shop  apparait sur la pochette de l&rsquo;album \u201cIll Communication\u201d des Beastie Boys en 1994.
